BURGAW — Carolyn Batson Evans, born on February 1, 1940, in Burgaw, NC passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025. She was 85 years old.

She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas Herman Batson and Jessie Alberta Jordan Batson.

She was also predeceased by sisters Virginia Dare Batson Lee Winnick (Robert), Laurice Annette Batson Reid (Robert) and Martha Love Batson Hinson (Larry) and brothers Thomas Russell Batson (Lucille), Donald McKay Batson (Melba), Edward John “EJ” Batson (Bonnie) and Julian Ray Batson (Carol).

She is survived by her sister Peggy Garland Batson Singleton (Donald) of Conway, SC and several nieces and nephews.

Carolyn was born into poverty in Burgaw, NC. Her Mother, Jessie Batson, sadly passed away during childbirth with her tenth child. After that, Carolyn and three siblings were placed in the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh, NC, where she spent fourteen years. At the age of 16 she left the orphanage and moved to Wilmington, NC, where she attended and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1958.

In 1959, Carolyn attended nursing school at James Walker Memorial Hospital in Wilmington, NC where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1962.

In 1964, she attended Anesthesia School at Duke University/Watts Hospital in Durham, NC where she graduated in 1966 as an RN in Anesthesia and upon passing her exams she became a CRNA, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She worked as a CRNA at Durham Regional Hospital for 40 years, retiring in 2005.

In retirement she enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, gardening and working with her church family.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Saturday, August 16th, 2025, at 1pm at the family homestead, 6206 Stag Park Road, Burgaw, NC.
