WILMINGTON — It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edwin Harrell Benton, better known as Eddie, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. Eddie departed this life on July 11, 2025, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 69. Eddie found solace and strength in his faith, believing in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Born on February 17, 1956, in Southport, NC, Eddie spent his formative years cultivating a love for music and adventure. He was the cherished son of the late parents, Elwood and Sally Benton, whose legacy he honored throughout his life.
Eddie was the proud owner and operator of Guitar Pickers, a Guitar and Music Store in Wilmington, where he shared his passion for music with the community for many years until his retirement. Known affectionately as a “Rock Star” by family, friends, and customers alike, Eddie was the founder of The Jam Sandwich Band and played with numerous other bands throughout the region, leaving a lasting impact on the local music scene.
His devotion to music extended beyond performance, as he was renowned for his passion for buying and selling vintage guitars, particularly those by Gibson. Eddie took great joy in mentoring young musicians, always eager to lend a guiding hand.
Outside of his musical pursuits, Eddie enjoyed long car rides, motorcycle journeys, boating, and fishing, especially in the scenic areas around Snows Cut and Carolina Beach. His adventurous spirit and warm heart endeared him to all who knew him.
Eddie leaves behind his beloved wife of over 26 years, Sharmon Denise Ganey, who shared an everlasting love for each other, and his cherished daughter, Alanis Benton. He is also survived by his brother Elwood Benton, sister Kay, and his special dog, Sadie Mae. Along with his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends, that will dearly miss his presence.
A Celebration of Life service will be planned for a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor and remember Eddie’s extraordinary life and legacy.
Edwin Harrell Benton lived a life rich with music, love, and adventure. He will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
