WILMINGTON — Bobbie Jean Shields Scott passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on December 29, 1929, in Kernersville, North Carolina, Bobbie lived a long and meaningful life filled with love, faith, and quiet strength.
She grew up working on her family’s farm alongside her six siblings, where she learned the values of hard work, resilience, and caring for the land—principles she carried with her throughout her life. As a teenager, Bobbie made biscuits every night for the family and filled the kitchen with the sound of country music, which she loved to sing while she baked. She attended Sedge Garden High School, where she played basketball and made lifelong memories.
Bobbie was a devoted mother, grandmother, beloved sister, and friend who cherished her time with family and friends and found joy in life’s simple pleasures.
She met her husband, Dewey Roy Scott, when he attended a high school basketball game to watch her play. They were married on November 10, 1947, in Forsyth County, North Carolina, and made their first home in East Bend before moving to Wilmington in 1960. They shared a loving partnership until Dewey’s passing on May 16, 2002.
A woman of strong faith, Bobbie was a longtime member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, where she found community, comfort, and purpose. She was also a talented seamstress, known for her careful hands and eye for detail—creating and mending with both skill and love. An avid gardener, she had a deep love for flowers and nature, and her home was always surrounded by beauty she cultivated with care and patience. She also enjoyed quietly supporting her friends and neighbors whenever she could, offering help in small, thoughtful ways.
Bobbie had a special place in her heart for animals. She welcomed several rescued dogs and cats into her home over the years, each one becoming a treasured companion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Scott; her parents, Andy and Shellie Shields; her brother-in-law, Bennie Craven (Sadie); and her siblings: Wyatte Shields (Ruby Leonard), Aniece Todd (Dave), Jack Shields (Jean), Margerite Marmie (Earl), and Harper Shields.
She is survived by her sons: Ron (Helen), Mike, Mark, and Randy; her grandchildren: Brian, Chelsea (Sonny Unverferth), Rachel, and Mitchell; her great-grandson, Miles; her cherished sister, Sadie Blanche Craven; her cherished niece, Betty Shields; and her sister-in-law, Virginia Lankford Shields (Harper).
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Andrews Mortuary Valley Chapel, 4108 College Road. The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Oleander Memorial Gardens, 306 Bradley Drive, at 2:00 p.m. All who knew and loved Bobbie are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bobbie Scott Memorial Fund at the Friends of the Arboretum, New Hanover County, by mail at 6206 Oleander Drive, Wilmington, NC 28403, or online at www.thefriends.wildapricot.org/donate, in tribute to Bobbie’s kind and compassionate spirit.
