WILMINGTON — On May 29, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the cherished soul of Lassie Bell Barrueta Miller was released from this world to Heaven, leaving family, friends, and even the most casual of acquaintances grateful for the kindnesses and radiant smiles she so freely shared.
Born in Wilmington on March 24th, 1952, and named for a beloved great aunt, Lassie was the youngest of Evelyn Willson Soverel Garvin’s three daughters. In the days of neighborhood schools and friendships, she was known to be selfless and encouraging—a natural giver that friends and family relied on for good humor and unwavering support. And in her senior year at New Hanover High School, her gentle gifts were recognized by a shy young man who appreciated her bright spirit more than any other—her future husband and soulmate, Stephen M. Miller.
After graduation, they embarked on a fifty-three-year journey of love and mutual respect, welcoming two daughters whom Lassie also showered with loving energy. Ever-present for her family, Lassie made their lives better and easier, always offering a listening ear, a warm hug, and a million thoughtful gestures that will be forever missed.
Her steadfast loyalty and commitment to those she loved were her greatest strengths, and her sparkling laughter brightened every room she entered. She could lift any stranger’s heavy mood with a smile and a few words, and children were always drawn to her, sensing her compassion for anyone who simply needed to be seen.
In a world that often values accomplishments more than contributions, Lassie will be honored and remembered by all who loved her for exemplifying the kindness of spirit that truly made a difference in our lives.
She is survived by her husband, Stephen “Steve” Miller, daughters Jennifer Miller and Jessica Miller, her sisters, Evelyn B. Meares and Maud B. Livingston (Paul), as well as one grandchild, two generations of nieces and nephews, and extended family on the Miller side who are all so grateful for the years they were able to share with her.
A memorial service will be held at Andrews Mortuary’s Valley Chapel location on Saturday the 14th of June. Family will begin welcoming guests at 2pm, with service to begin at 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest donations be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (Hospice), whose on-site team provided both care and comfort in Lassie’s final days.
