WILMINGTON — Joseph John Zambella Sr., affectionately known as “Sonny,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the age of 92 in Wilmington, NC.
Born on March 20, 1933, in Washington, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Nicholas Zambella and Anna Almade. He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as his brothers Chester Pesto, Walter Gregorczyk, and Alex “Jr” Pesto.
Joseph is survived by his cherished wife, Virginia Zambella; and his loving children, Joseph Jr. “Joey” Zambella, Rebecca (Kenny) Guyette, and Cheryl (James) Ganey. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Brad Goodfellow, Ryan (Jordyn) Zambella, Bianca (Tayler) Doty, Sable (Richard) Keller, Daphne (Daniel) O’Neill, Bailey Goodfellow, and Rayne Ganey—as well as his great-grandchildren Nevaeh, Gunnar, Piper, and Winston. He is also remembered by his siblings: John, Eddie, Nancy, Shirley, Virginia “Doka,” Rosemary, and Patricia “Pat.”
Joseph was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, affectionately known as “Papa.” A devoted follower of Christ, he was actively involved with Lighthouse Shining Ministries. His passions included gardening, fishing, cooking, constructing various projects, and simply tinkering with things. He had a fondness for classic Western films and shows. In his younger years, he relished camping adventures with his family, while in later life, he found joy in spending time outdoors. It was not uncommon to see him exploring the gardens and trees of others, always curious and engaged with nature. Joseph also appreciated his rest, often indulging in long naps even after just a few hours of wakefulness.
He was deeply loved by family and friends alike, known for his ability to brighten any room with his witty remarks and engaging conversations. His absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew him, especially his signature gummy smile that hinted at his playful spirit.
