Donald “Big D” Harry Nabors, 71

Donald “Big D” Harry Nabors (Peacock, Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service)

SOUTHPORT — It brings us great sadness to announce the passing of Donald “Big D” Harry Nabors born October 20, 1953. He was called home by the Lord on April 18, 2025. Don was 71 years old.

Don was born and raised in Morgantown, West Virginia until the age of 10, when his Dad relocated the family to Ohio. Don was born as a twin to Danny whom he loved dearly and survives him today.

Don was well-liked throughout his school years and he loved sports. In high school, Don played both football and baseball, which he loved until his passing. He graduated from Woodsfield High School in 1973 and upon graduation, he went to the Union Coal Mines in Ohio.

He eventually migrated back to West Virginia where he raised his 2 daughters.

He never let go of his “blue and gold blood” as they say and was an avid WVU football fan.

During his teen years, he worked different farm jobs and at a tire shop. After graduation, he joined the coal mines. He had a successful career as a coal miner for 30 years. He advanced his career through vocational training, eventually earning him the title of foreman. Subsequently, moved on to become a fire boss and was highly respected throughout the coal mine industry. He retired from the Coal Mines in 2000 where he later migrated to New York as he had met his loving devoted wife, Beth. Don attained employment at the NYS Department of Transportation where he quickly attained a supervisor position.

Don loved his family; all of his family. Once married to Beth, the love of his life, they rarely missed a family reunion and were always happy to catch up. He had a wonderful loving relationship with his niece, Rachel and her husband Bud. His great nephews Trent and Colt were the apple of his eye. He spent much time at his niece’s country home when visiting West Virginia. He loved his family time.

His parents Oliver and Betty predeceased him. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Beth, twin brother Danny and older sister Linda, his loving stepchildren Daniella, Jonathan and wife Krystal, David (Julia), and grandson Jonathan, who have been by his side and dedicated since the day they met him. His niece Rachel, husband Bud, nephew Thomas Davis and his wife Billie and great nephews Trent and Colton. Dons two daughters and three grandchildren continue to reside in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Don loved sports; especially games his family were playing. He would attend any and all games when in town. He watched every Pittsburgh Steeler Game. His love of music built him an itunes library of more than 10,000 songs. He loved to fish and go to the beach and his F-150. He was a kind gentle and loving soul that only wanted peace all around him.

Don had many friends that truly enjoyed and supported him in all he did. His best friend was his little Yorkshire Terrier, “Mia.” She melted his heart, he took her everywhere.

He was very funny and would always amaze the New Yorker’s with his unique sayings, like ”Butter my Butt and call me a biscuit” or “What in Tarnation,” which his grandson Jonathan just loved.

He was always happy to lend a helping hand and would volunteer for different events after he moved to North Carolina. He retired in November 2013 and used that time to enjoy his life to the fullest. He took excellent care of his loving wife. He loved birdwatching and enjoyed the thrill of learning all the birds and their sounds. He could build or fix anything and “The Duck” as he was affectionately known as was always the “go to” guy.

His passing is a shock to all, and he will be more than missed. The memories of Don Nabors will be cherished by all.

His wife and family have requested, in lieu of flowers, a donation in Don’s name made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
