Nancy Lee Bender Madliger, 90

WILMINGTON — Nancy Lee Bender Madliger passed away peacefully on February 24, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.

She is survived by her children: Debra Carter, Terry Madliger Gioielli (Joe), and David Madliger. Her five grandchildren: Kathryn Carter, Jessica Gioielli Slayton (Phil), Tyler Gioielli, Cody Gioielli and DJ Madliger loved her immensely. For over 40 years, she was their biggest cheerleader at dance recitals, school functions, softball, soccer, volleyball and basketball games. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Ryan Thomas Carter.

Nancy was born and raised in Wilmington and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1952. A few weeks later, she was introduced to a handsome Marine stationed in Camp Lejeune. Six weeks later, they were married. William James Madliger was her true love and soulmate, and their marriage lasted almost 52 years until his death in January 2005.

They were both very active in the life of Bethany. Nancy served as Sunday school teacher, elder, treasurer and numerous positions in the Women of Bethany. She coordinated Bethany’s Meals on Wheels community outreach for 10 years and helped wherever she was needed. Nancy enjoyed spending time reading, puzzles, board games and watching her UNC-CH basketball team. Her sense of humor and zest for life will be missed forever.

Donations in memory of Nancy’s life can be sent to the Women of Bethany to support their continuing mission outreach programs.
