WILMINGTON — Earl Lee DeCell, age 72, of Hubert, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2025, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on December 27, 1952, in Franklin, Vermont to the late Martin DeCell and Mary (Crowder) DeCell, Earl lived a life full of warmth, humor, and kindness that touched all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Earl spent his formative years in the charming town of St. Albans, Vermont, where he cultivated a passion for Ham Radio Operation, call letters K1YLB. His voice, carried over the airwaves, connected him to countless others, reflecting his innate ability to make friends wherever he went. Earl’s life was marked by his boundless generosity and his knack for bringing laughter into any room. He had a unique gift for turning strangers into friends and was always there with a helping hand when needed.
A devoted fan of the New York Giants, Earl could often be found cheering on his favorite team. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed the simple pleasures of fishing and reading, pursuits that brought him peace and joy.
Earl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda (Rix) DeCell; cherished daughter, Anita; beloved son, Edwin; grandson, Dante; sisters, Judy and Mary; sister-in-law, Betty; and brothers-in-law, Larry Sr., Gordon, Mike, and Tom. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving family: daughter, LaDonna “Susie” DeCell; sons, Ziggy DeCell, Barry Leffel, III, and Travis DeCell with his wife, Christy. Earl was a proud grandfather to Makayla, Anakin, Joan, Tristen, Trendon, and Trayson. He also leaves behind his dear sister, Nancy Beaulieu, and brother, George DeCell, along with his wife, Lillian. Earl’s legacy continues through several nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
Earl’s life was a beacon of generosity and compassion. Always ready to lend a helping hand, his presence was a source of comfort and strength. His ability to make people laugh and feel valued was a gift that enriched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at a later date in Vermont, where family and friends will gather to honor a man whose life was a beautiful tapestry of love, laughter, and friendship.
