LELAND — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert William DellaPia, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born on September 25, 1951, in Newark, NJ, Robert left this world peacefully at the age of 73 on Sunday February 9, 2025, in Leland, NC, due to natural causes.
Robert dedicated his professional life to education, where he passionately taught mathematics and coached track in the NJ Township School system. His dedication not only enriched the minds of countless students but also inspired many young athletes to push beyond their limits, instilling in them a lifelong appreciation for discipline and hard work.
Outside of his career, Robert cherished the simple joys in life. He found immense happiness spending time with his loyal dog, Peanut, whose companionship brought him endless comfort and laughter. A lover of good company, Robert delighted in the camaraderie of bowling nights and spirited card games, where his competitive spirit and infectious smile always shone brightly.
Robert had an unwavering passion for exercise, embodying a commitment to staying active and healthy throughout his life. Yet, he never denied himself the pleasures he loved the most—particularly his fondness for ice cream, which he savored with childlike enthusiasm.
Preceded in death by his parents, Gus DellaPia and Julie DellaPia Tur, and brothers, Mike and Sal DellaPia, Robert’s memory will forever be cherished by those he leaves behind.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of 38 years, Diane Smith DellaPia; his loving son, Rick DellaPia, and wife Phylisha; brother Gus DellaPia and wife Regina; and his adored grandchildren Kayla Herbert and husband Trace and Ricky DellaPia; great-grandchildren Avery and Colhen Herbert , who will carry forth his legacy of warmth and kindness. He also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews.
Though no services are planned at this time, Robert’s spirit lives on through all who knew him. His love, laughter, and lessons will continue to inspire and nurture the many lives he touched. May we honor Robert by embracing each moment as he did—with love, energy, and an unwavering zest for life.
