Elizabeth Ann Murphy, 76

Elizabeth Ann Murphy (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Elizabeth Ann Murphy, known to her family as Betty Ann, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2025 at the age of 76 near her home in Wilmington, NC.

Betty Ann was born on December 11, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA. She is preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Ligia (Lee) Murphy (nee Rosanio), whom she loved greatly.

Betty Ann leaves behind her daughter, Stephanie Gillin, along with Stephanie’s husband, Brian Gillin, and their son, Brayden Lee Gillin. She also leaves behind her son, Louis Grossman, his wife, Pamela, and their daughter, Jacquelyn. Additionally, Stephanie has adopted Betty Ann’s beloved Shih Tzu, Ruby, who was her cherished companion.

Betty Ann is also remembered by her sister, Franny Murphy, and Franny’s husband, Bruce Ferry. She is also survived by her brother, Chris Murphy, and his wife, Helen. Their family includes Heather McAdam, her husband, Michael, and their children, Mikey and Annalyn; Laurie Murphy and her son, Dean; and Christopher Murphy.

An avid reader, Betty Ann owned hundreds of books throughout her lifetime and could talk for hours on a wide range of topics. She was also a great lover of music, enjoying everything from Tchaikovsky to La Bohème to Peter Gabriel.

Betty Ann had a deep love for movies and eagerly anticipated the Oscars each year, though her all-time favorite film remained It’s a Wonderful Life. She was also an enthusiastic collector of nostalgia, with a special fondness for Disney and Betty Boop.

Her favorite holiday was Christmas, and she never failed to buy or make thoughtful gifts for her family and friends, especially the children. On Christmas Eve, she cherished going to her cousin Ronnie Pizzuto’s house for a big celebration, where she enjoyed incredible food and laughter with her family.

Though Betty Ann spent much of her life in Philadelphia, she later moved to Wilmington, NC, to be near the beach and her lifelong best friend, Jeannie Patel, who preceded her in death. Betty Ann’s family finds comfort in the thought that Jeannie, along with Orville and Lee, was there to greet her upon her passing and help guide her on her way.

Per Betty Ann’s wishes, there will be no service, but if you feel so inclined, turn on some Peter Gabriel and think of her.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution in Betty Ann’s honor.
