Bonnie (Wooten) Heflin (Michael J. Fulwood Funeral Service License)

OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Bonnie Heflin, 86, died peacefully on January 5, 2025, at the Hospice House of Brunswick, surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer, inspiring everyone with her strength.

Bonnie was born in Iredell County on December 1, 1938, to the late Hazel Wooten Ladd. She lived her life with fortitude, independence, and an unyielding spirit, blazing trails and inspiring those fortunate enough to know her. A stoic yet gracious presence, Bonnie faced life’s challenges with quiet resilience, always meeting adversity with grace and determination. She was one of the first female police officers in Winston-Salem, joining in 1967, breaking barriers at a time when women were not in the field.

She worked in Field Services and was later promoted to Sergeant, in charge of a team of male and female officers. Most of her career in law enforcement was leadership in the Juvenile Division, where she supported and protected vulnerable children. Following her retirement in 1993, she remained involved with SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) and served as a Guardian ad Litem in Forsyth County.

A progressive soul, Bonnie was ahead of her time in embracing change and championing equality. She loved the adventure of real estate, finding joy in moving to new places. Each new space reflected her meticulous nature and fastidious attention to detail. She spent most of her retired years in Florida, where she enjoyed playing golf and traveling.

Her legacy is one of strength, courage, and a deep love for life and the people in it. Bonnie leaves behind a family who adored and admired her, countless friends who loved and supported her, and a world better for her presence.

Bonnie is survived by her husband of 41 years, Ret. Cpl. Terry P. Heflin, her children Mike Nicholson (Ying), Rick Nicholson (Robin), and Sharon Nicholson Ralston (Greg); three grandchildren, Katie Ralston, Grant Ralston, and Mclain Ralston; a stepson, Stephen Heflin and his daughter Kelsey; and two brothers Charles Ladd (Bette) and Ralph Ladd (Rita).

She was preceded in death by her sister, Connie W. Cass.

In addition to her family, Bonnie is survived by her four best friends of over 40 years, Sandra Flowe, Phyllis Henry, and Debbie Boone, who brought joy, laughter and a constant source of support through life’s milestones.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Bonnie’s life will be held at Trinity Methodist Church, 3819 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Winston-Salem Police Foundation, or The Parenting PATH: Positive Actions. Thriving Homes. (formerly SCAN), reflecting her lifelong commitment to justice and caring for others.
