John “Jack” Francis Sullivan (Andrews Mortuary and Crematory)

WILMINGTON — John “Jack” Francis Sullivan, 79, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2024.

Born and raised in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, Jack was the eldest of Jack and Marion Sullivan’s three children. He grew up surrounded by a tight-knit community of friends, many of whom remained close throughout his life. He is survived by his sister Maureen Kehoe and his brother Chris Sullivan (Maria).

In 1968, Jack married Marydith “Merry,” and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage filled with love and adventure. Together they settled in Hopewell Jct. NY, where they raised four children: Laura (Keith), Jack (Kate), Jim (Lisa), and Kevin (Ellen). Jack was especially proud of his ten grandchildren: Taylor, Brandon, Erin, Kylee (Ben), Jack, Keaton, Aidan, Mallory, Maggie, and Casey. They affectionately called him “Poppi” and could always count on and looked forward to the fresh donut and bagel deliveries every morning of a visit. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and one grandnephew who were dear to him.

Jack served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1967 to 1973 and was a longtime member of the Charles N. Bajart, Jr. American Legion Post in Yonkers, NY. Professionally, Jack worked for 14 years at Metro-North Railroad in New York City’s Grand Central Station before spending the bulk of his career as an elevator construction mechanic with IUEC Local 1. He retired in 2006 after a long and fulfilling career.

In retirement, Jack and Merry moved to Wilmington, NC, where they spent the past 10 years enjoying life by the beach. Jack took great pride in his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. He loved hosting family and friends, and his home was always a place of warmth and welcome. Jack’s greatest joy came from the small, thoughtful gestures he made for those he loved. He will be remembered for his generosity, sense of humor, and deep commitment to his family.

A private family service will be held for the immediate family followed by a celebration of life gathering at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wounded Warriors Project

Jack will be greatly missed, but his love and legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Please leave condolences for the family here.
