WILMINGTON — Gerald Stephen Mitchell, 79, of Wilmington, NC passed away Saturday, December 14, 2024, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Steve proudly served in United States Army as a member of the renowned 82nd Airborne Division and saw action overseas, and he later coordinated community charity events through the VFW.
Following a long career in engineering, Steve volunteered his time to Meals on Wheels through the local Elks Lodge and was a member of the American Legion. He loved woodworking and playing golf, and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Henry Mitchell; mother, Edna Scott Mitchell; and sister Margaret Maurer.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 46 years, Jill Mitchell; sons Mark Mitchell (Dana), Parker Mitchell (Erica), and Tyler Mitchell; brother, Rick Mitchell; sister, Sharon Equihua; grandchildren, Kennedy Mitchell, Wyatt Young, and Rivers Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to honor Steve’s life will be held after the New Year, and details will be announced in the coming weeks.
