Ruby Lorene McClain, 82

Ruby Lorene McClain (Peacock, Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service)

SOUTHPORT — Ruby Lorene McClain, born May 22, 1942, passed away peacefully in her home with her family surrounding her on Saturday, October 26, 2024 at 82 years old.

Lorene was an amazing woman who lived a life of adventure, love, and joy. She married Robert McClain 61 years ago and they lived all around the world due to his service in the United States Navy. After his retirement, she and Robert moved to a farm where they had so many fond memories together, before finally moving to Boiling Spring Lakes where they have lived for over 40 years, making lifelong friends, creating beautiful memories and watching their family grow and flourish.

Lorene loved to cook, it was one of her many ways of showing how much she loved her family. Many times, she would cook for church and holiday parties and even weddings. Most importantly, she always made her daughter, her granddaughter and her great-grandson macaroni and cheese. She loved to cook big dinners for the holidays, and enjoy those meals around the table with her family. Easter was her favorite holiday, and she always, regardless of age, participated in Easter egg hunts. Her other love was gardening. She always loved to get the first cucumber in the summer, and she loved growing greens in the winter.

More than anything else, she loved her family. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert Lee, two sisters Darlene and Charlotte, and her daughter Charlene. She leaves behind her adoring husband Robert, son-in-law Steve, loving granddaughter Tabitha and husband Joe and her great-grandson, her little darling, Robert Rory Mac as well as nieces, cousins, an aunt and many beloved friends.

Lorene would like to be remembered when you see a beautiful blooming flower, or bite into a garden fresh tomato, or are enjoying cooking something in your kitchen for your family. We will see her in the leaves falling in autumn and the flowers blooming in spring, the wonderful vegetable gardens of summer and the hearty greens growing in the winter, at holidays around the table, and in Easter egg hunts with bright blooming azaleas, when birds visit the yard on dew filled mornings and on still nights with whippoorwills. Those sublime moments are where she lives now–there and in our hearts and memories where she will be remembered fondly over the years until we meet again.

She will be remembered for her legacy of love, as the matriarch of our family throughout the generations. She is at peace now and no more in pain. She will be loved forever and so deeply missed.
