WILMINGTON — Harry Ruggle Pope, Sr., a cherished figure in his community and beloved family patriarch, passed away peacefully from natural causes on October 31, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born in Columbus County, NC, on May 9, 1934, Harry lived a full and inspiring life reaching the age of 90.
Devoted to his craft, Harry owned and operated the Sunset Barber Shop for an impressive 64 years. His dedication to his work was unwavering, as he continued to serve his customers regularly until his health began to decline several months ago. Beyond his professional life, Harry found joy in spending time on his farm in Pender County, where he delighted in harvesting his garden.
A proud veteran, Harry served his country faithfully in the United States Army. He exemplified the values of service and commitment throughout his life, leaving a legacy of hard work, integrity, and love for family and friends.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Glenn Pope and Edith Orr Pope. He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly. His son, Harry Ruggles Pope, Jr., and his wife Renee; his daughter, Sandra P. Abeyounis, and her husband Morris; his brother Wade Pope and his wife Catherine; his grandchildren, Justin Ruggles Pope and wife Lynn and Bryan Edward Abeyounis and wife Becca; two great-grandchildren, Winter and Dexter Pope; and a niece, Deborah Roberts and her husband John, all survive him and cherish his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be directed to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, in memory of Harry Ruggle Pope, Sr. His family extends their gratitude to all who knew and loved him, honoring his life and legacy with fond remembrance.
