WILMINGTON — Charles William Parnell, aged 80, passed away on October 28, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina. Born on November 23, 1943, Charles dedicated much of his life to his community and his faith.
Charles was a devoted Christian, a commitment that shaped his personal and professional life. Charles graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and served as a teacher and coach before assuming the role as Director of Parks and Recreation for Davidson County for more than 32 years. His true passion was the Special Olympics where he coached and mentored athletes and led them to victory at the World Games. Charles was known for his love of golf, dancing, and cheering for Alabama football; activities that he not only enjoyed but also used to connect with people from all walks of life.
Charles is survived by his son, Charles Parnell Jr and his wife Heather; daughter, Tara Parnell and husband Patrick Weaver; brother, Bernie Parnell and wife Diane; and three grandchildren, Jordan Parnell and wife Gentry, Riley Parnell, and Tanner Hamilton, and many nieces and nephews. His life was a testament to his values and his love for his family and community.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Venue 23 at Abbotts Creek, 190 Howard Black Road, Lexington NC, at 2:00 PM on November 23, 2024, marking what would have been his 81st birthday. This gathering will honor his memory and his enduring impact on those fortunate enough to have known him.
