WILMINGTON — Mary Elizabeth James, born on January 22, 1924, in Niles, Ohio, peacefully passed away on October 16, 2024, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the remarkable age of 100. Her centennial life journey was marked by grace, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Mary’s story began in Niles, where she spent her early years cultivating a love for family and hard work. Together with her beloved husband, Donald E. James, Sr., Mary owned and operated James Dairy, a cherished local establishment that sparked a lifelong love of ice cream for the entire family. After they sold the dairy, she continued to serve her community as the dedicated secretary to the Mayor of Niles, a role she fulfilled with poise and efficiency for many years.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Mary’s true passion was her family. She was the epitome of a devoted mother to her children, Sallie and Don Jr., nurturing them with love and wisdom. Once her children embarked on their own paths in life, Mary and Don embraced a new chapter by moving to Sun City Hilton Head in South Carolina. There, she found joy in gardening, tending to her vibrant flowers, and fostering a love of learning in young students through tutoring and mentoring at Hardeeville Elementary School. She also relished time at the swimming pool and playfully attempted to master the game of golf, all while building cherished memories with those around her.
Mary and Don shared 74 beautiful years of marriage, having been childhood sweethearts. Their journey together was filled with laughter, love, and numerous adventures, including becoming bocci ball champions at Sun City. After leaving Sun City, they relocated to Wilmington, North Carolina, where Mary continued to share her warmth and wisdom with all who knew her.
She spent her final days at Spring Arbor in Wilmington, lovingly cared for by the attentive staff and under the compassionate guidance of Shawn Johnson from Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.
Mary is preceded in death by her dear husband, Don. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her children, Donald James Jr. and his wife Suzanne, and Sallie Bohn and her husband David; her grandchildren, Nathan and Ryan Bohn; and her great-grandchildren, Brecken, Warner, Caine, Brooks, Landon, and Cielle.
Her life was a testament to unconditional love, service, and resilience. Though her physical presence will be sorely missed, her spirit lives on in the hearts of her family and friends.
A celebration of Mary Elizabeth James’ life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare in Wilmington, NC, in honor of the exceptional care and comfort they provided during her last days.
Mary’s long and fulfilling life touched countless others, and her memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.
