WILMINGTON — Gwen Skipper Canady, born on April 24, 1954, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024, at the age of 70. She will be remembered as a beloved member of her community and church, where she was known for her kindness and generosity.

Gwen was a graduate of Leland High School and a graduate of UNC Wilmington.

Gwen dedicated 32 years to shaping young minds as a teacher at Lincoln Primary School in Leland, where she was cherished not only for her teaching but also for the nurturing spirit that earned her the affectionate name “Mama Gwen” from many of her students.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Leland, Gwen’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She actively served in numerous roles within the church, offering her time and talents to enrich the lives of those around her. Her commitment to service extended beyond her immediate circles as she lovingly crocheted hats and scarves for veterans and unique mats for the homeless, sharing her warmth with those in need.

Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, John Thurman Skipper and Bernice Swain Skipper, and her brothers, Wycuff, Thelton, and Thayre Skipper.

She is survived by her children: Alecia Davis Geddings of Bolivia, NC; Jacob Davis of Wilmington, NC; Natalie Davis Tuipulotu and her husband Sione of Kingwood, TX; and Ethan Davis and his wife Meehea of Arlington, VA. Her grandchildren, Swain Curtin Jethro and her husband Jackson, Piper Geddings, Joab Tuipulotu, Wally Davis, and Max Davis, will carry on her legacy, along with her brother Dyion Skipper and sister Bess Skipper. Gwen’s extended family and countless friends also mourn her passing, remembering the profound impact she had on their lives.

Gwen’s life was a testament to the power of kindness, dedication, and community. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew her, and her spirit will continue to inspire those she left behind.

Gwen’s dedication to her church’s Youth Program was a testament to her nurturing spirit and devotion to the younger generation. In honor of her memory, donations may be made to the Youth Camp Fund at her church, ensuring her legacy of support for youth continues.

May Gwen Skipper Canady rest in peace, cherished by all who knew and loved her.
