WILMINGTON — Obbie M. Blanton III, affectionately known as “Butch” and “PopPop”, passed away peacefully at his home in Winnabow, NC on September 20, 2024.
He was born in Wilmington, NC to Mary S. Blanton and the late Obbie M. Blanton Jr., and was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor who made a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Obbie’s passion for law enforcement began with the Carolina Beach Police Department, where he launched his career, and later retired as a Lieutenant with the Wilmington Police Department. He was deeply committed to mentoring future law enforcement officers as the Director of the BLET program at Brunswick Community College, shaping the lives of many students who sought to follow in his footsteps.
A devoted family man, Obbie cherished his time spent with his five granddaughters, who brought immense joy to his life. He loved traveling on road trips with his dad, camping with his wife, Valerie, and enjoying moments spent with his beloved dogs. Obbie had a keen interest in history and found peace in the simple pleasure of relaxing on his back porch while smoking a cigar. He was actively involved in his church, further demonstrating his commitment and love for his community and his faith.
Obbie is preceded in death by his father, Obbie M. Blanton Jr., and his sister, Susan B. Johnson. He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Valerie; his mother, Mary S. Blanton; a sister, Toi (Brian); daughters, Rachel (Chris), Olivia (Zack), and Ashley; and sons, Jared and Frank; and his five beautiful granddaughters.
Obbie will forever be remembered for his loyalty, hard work, passion, sense of humor, and quick wit. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched, especially his students, who will carry forward the lessons he instilled in them. Obbie’s spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m., Friday September 27, 2024, at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College. A Celebration of Life Service will be held immediately following at 2 p.m.
