WILMINGTON — Walter James “Coach” Miller, 82, passed away on August 16, 2024, in Wilmington, NC. Born on February 20, 1942, in New Brunswick, NJ and was raised in Allentown, PA.
He was a cherished figure in the lives of his family, friends, and the many students he taught and coached.
Walter’s life was marked by his unwavering optimism and a perpetual smile that could light up any room. Known affectionately as Coach, he dedicated over 30 years to educating young minds at Old Bridge Township Public Schools in New Jersey, where he also made his mark as a coach. He led the Girls Cross Country team to a Group IV State Championship in 2001 and also coached Boys JV Basketball and Girls Track & Field.
Walter’s personal life was filled with love and joy. He met his beloved wife Rita, fondly called Re-Re, in college. Together, they raised three daughters: Lisa, Sherri, and Christine, instilling in them the values of compassion, humor, kindness, and the importance of family. He was filled with love and pride for his two grandchildren, Maggie and Danny, who knew him as Pop Pop.
After retiring, Walter and Rita moved to Wilmington, NC, where they enjoyed a life of travel, family celebrations, and poolside happy hours. An avid Duke basketball fan and a proud Democrat, Walt lived his life with passion and enthusiasm.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents, Walter James and Catherine Miller, as well as his brothers-in-law, Frank Forst and Dennis Wichman.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rita; daughters, Lisa Bentz, Sherri Keelen, and Christine Miller; son-in-law, Greg Keelen; grandchildren, Maggie and Danny Keelen; brother, Dr. Richard Miller; sisters-in-law, Janice Miller, Janet Forst, and Marilyn Wichman; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life luncheon will be from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, 2024 at Station No. 2 at 602 S 5th Ave. Wilmington, NC 28401.
Walt’s legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed.
