Susan (Hartlage) Grubbs, 78

Susan (Hartlage) Grubbs (Michael J. Fulwood Funeral Service License)

SUNSET BEACH — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Susan Hartlage Grubbs on July 30, 2024 at the age of 78.

Susan was born on Mar 20, 1946 to Albert and Gaynelle Hartlage in Winston-Salem, NC. She graduated from North Forsyth High School in 1964.

Susan spent more than three decades as a second-generation employee of RJR, retiring in 2002. Thirty of those years were in the Travel Department where she was responsible for helping hundreds of employees handle the company’s varying business interests around the globe. It was a time of significant change in the travel industry, and because of her ability to adapt to new requirements and procedures, she gained a reputation as the “go to” person for travel needs.

Susan married Steve Bennet Grubbs in 2007 in a ceremony at a wedding chapel in Las Vegas.

Her sisters, Dolores and Katherine, and her brother in law were surprise attendees? Champagne toasts in a limo ensued.

Susan loved to travel, especially to places with beaches. She and her husband Steve could often be found making plans for their next cruise either by themselves or with others. Susan also loved her flowers and weekly card games with friends and neighbors. It’s no doubt that spending time with family and celebrating life with her friends is what brought her the biggest joy. Susan also loved to share her smile and it was rare to see her or her family and friends without one when she was around. It’s easy to understand why she held such a special place in everyone’s heart and will be forever missed. She was also known to be the best at folding sheets and towels around!

Susan is survived by her husband, Steve Grubbs; her siblings, Dolores Hoilman, Fred Hartlage (Dianne), and Katherine Coats (Terry); brother in law, Doug Grubbs (Cynthia) as well as special nieces and nephews.

Our family would like to extend a deep appreciation to Lower Cape Fear Hospice. We will be forever grateful for the support and kindness shown.

A celebration of her life will be held Sept 7 in Winston-Salem. For now, go take a walk on the beach or hug someone you love in her memory. If you hear beach music in the background, you will know that Susan is with you on your journey.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Online condolences are encouraged and may be sent to the family here.
