WILMINGTON — Lela Saunders Jones, born on October 8, 1928, in Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully at her home in Wilmington on July 25, 2024, at the age of 95.
Lela spent much of her early years in Suffolk, VA, and she began her professional journey with Bell Labs. She was a dedicated student and a proud graduate of UNC-Greensboro, which was formerly known as NC Women’s College. Her love for reading was a lifelong passion that brought her endless joy and knowledge.
A woman of deep faith, Lela was a devoted member of both Jamestown Presbyterian Church in Jamestown, NC, and St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, NC. Her spiritual community was a source of great comfort and strength throughout her life.
Lela is preceded in death by her parents, Marion Saunders and Vail Gray Saunders; her husbands, James Vernon Clark and Robert Jones; and her son, Bill Clark.
She is survived by her loving son, James V. Clark, and his wife Tammy of Wrightsville Beach. Lela’s legacy continues through her cherished grandsons, Will Clark, Gray Clark, Evers Clark, and Miller Clark, all of whom she adored.
Lela Saunders Jones will be remembered for her warmth, her wisdom, and her unwavering faith. She touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
