HAMPSTEAD — Melissa Scheiber Hartman passed away on July 2, 2024, at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Her death came suddenly and unexpectedly as the result of an unforeseen medical condition.
Melissa was born on June 2, 1977, in Decatur, Indiana, to Roland and Debra Auer Scheiber. Melissa moved to North Carolina at the age of two, and later to Virginia where she attended Prince George County Schools. Melissa graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia in 1999 after which she married her high school sweetheart Richard Davis Hartman Jr. of Prince George County, Virginia and settled down to start a family. Their son Richard “Davis” Hartman III was born in August 2004, and daughter Karli Reese Hartman was born in April 2007.
In the summer of 2007 the Hartman family of four moved to North Carolina to pursue a business venture, Right Coast Construction, and eventually built a home in Hampstead, North Carolina. Melissa, as a stay-at-home mother, was very involved in her children’s school and sports activities, and also worked alongside Richard in their construction business, was an active member of the Topsail High School Dugout Club, and served as the All Saints Catholic Church Parish Council Secretary.
Melissa is survived by her loving husband Richard of 24 years, and their two children Davis and Karli, parents Roland and Debra Scheiber, sisters Melinda Odom (Trey) and Brianne Scheiber (Meg), brother Adam (Alecia), niece Kennedy Odom, nephews Brandon and Caiden Scheiber and Krew Odom, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Melissa is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Gail and Janet Auer and paternal grandparents Robert and Elizabeth Scheiber, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Melissa was a light to all those that knew her. Her witty and fun-loving personality meant that she developed friendships easily and her loyalty meant that she kept many of those friendships for the duration. Her innate mother-like personality made her a person that was easy to come to for guidance and a soft place to land in times of need. Melissa loved her family and devoted much of her time to her family of four, as well as attended frequent get-togethers with her immediate, large family.
Melissa loved the water and being near the ocean or a pool was her “happy” place. It gives her family great peace, even in this tragic situation, to know that Melissa was truly happy in her life and felt fulfilled by all the blessings that surrounded her. In continuation of those blessings, her family is proud that, of the 170 million registered organ donors, Melissa was one of the less than 1% out of 1,000 of potential donors that met the criteria and was able to give the gift of life to three recipients through organ donation.
A Funeral and Memorial Mass will be held at All Saints Catholic Church (18737 Hwy 17, Hampstead, North Carolina 28443) on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. EST.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to the All Saints Catholic Church Building Fund. Please make checks payable to: All Saints Catholic Church. In the memo: Melissa Hartman Building Fund.
