Marguerite (Pittman) Powell, 102

Marguerite (Pittman) Powell (Quinn McGowen Funeral Home)

WILMINGTON — Mae Marguerite Powell, age 102, of Wilmington, NC passed away July 5, 2024, at Bradley Creek Health Center, New Hanover, NC,

She was born on April 22, 1922, in Wilson, NC, to the late Jefferson Lee Pittman and Gladys Mae (Bissett) Pittman.

Mom loved us deeply and taught us, her children the same through her example. She was fiercely protective of her family and instilled the love of the outdoors into each of us. She loved the beach, saltwater fishing, and collecting seashells. She loved nothing more than planting in the beautiful landscape that she created at our family home in Rocky Mount, NC. Mom was the “cool mom”, embracing all our friends, taking us to concerts and enjoying the music that constantly played, both live and recorded, in our house.

She was our biggest cheerleader, supporting and encouraging us in all of our various endeavors. Our mother lived a brave and courageous life, leaving behind a legacy of love of family, strength and determination.

Marguerite is survived by her sons, Jerry Powell and wife, Sandy, Rem Powell and wife Polly; daughter, Angela Powell and husband, Richard Craney; grandchildren, Lauren Culton and husband, Patrick, Jenna Powell and Remley Powell; and great-grandchildren, Mariella Culton, Emilia Culton, Oliver Culton, Graham Culton; and many other family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, Marguerite was also preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Powell.

A funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home in Wilmington with Pastor Laurelyn Shaw officiating. A visitation and reception will follow the service until 8:30 pm at the funeral home. Private burial at Rocky Mount Memorial Park, Rocky Mount, NC, at a later date.
