SOUTHPORT — William A. Sphar of Sunset Harbor, NC, formerly of Southington, OH, passed away on May 22, 2024.
William was born in Brownsville, Pa on June 6, 1932, to Dr. William and Sadie Eaton Sphar. William served in the U.S. Army in Whittier, Alaska during the Korean Conflict. On December 14, 1957, he married Nancy Hoagland and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage.
William (Doc) was a steelworker at Copperweld Steel in Warren, Ohio from 1956 to 1986. After retirement he and Nancy moved to Oak Island, NC and subsequently to Sunset Harbor, NC. While in NC, William worked part time jobs at CP&L as a security guard and later as a driver for Southern Hospitality.
He was passionate about the Pittsburgh Steelers, enjoyed volunteering for the NC 4th of July Festival and US Open King Mackerel Tournament. He was an avid fisherman.
Those who knew him would quickly describe him as a good guy. He was a kind and giving soul with a playful sense of humor. The sort of man who would clear driveways of snow or mow his neighbors’ grass because they couldn’t or ensure a shut-in had a special meal at holidays. He jokingly claimed he was hard of hearing because he lived with three women. He was devoted to and was loved by his “girls”. He lead by example and instilled in his daughters a clear sense of fairness, strong work ethic, and devotion to family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dr, Robert Sphar and Mrs. Sadie (Eaton) Sphar; brother, Robert Sphar; and sisters, Elizabeth Squires and Helen Sphar. William leaves behind his wife, Nancy; daughters, Sandy Wolfe (Alvin) of Sunset Harbor, NC and Karen Sphar of Southport, NC. Also missing him will be his grandson, Jeffrey (Deneen) Wolfe of Graham, NC; and great granddaughters, Sofia Wolfe of Jacksonville, Fl and Ava Wolfe of Graham, NC; and his best buddy, Midnight.
There will be no services and the family requests that gifts of remembrance be made to SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane, Bolivia, NC 28422.
