HAMPSTEAD — Iris McCullen, 88, of Hampstead, N.C., died January 7, 2024, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Iris was born August 21, 1935, to John Robert and Margorie Franklin Woollard of Congham, Norfolk, England. She was preceded in death by her brothers Fred and Billy Woollard and her sisters Hilda Holden and Joan Woollard. She is survived by her brother Rex Woollard. She was married to her husband, David Solomon McCullen, Jr., for 60 years and they had three children.
Iris was a published author who wrote poetry and short stories. She was also an accomplished seamstress and homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, and birdwatching. She had great faith in God and wanted a better world for all.
Iris is survived by her children, Robert McCullen of Epping, New Hampshire, Patricia Fettinger of Hampstead, N.C. and Matthew McCullen of Hampstead, N.C. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Dane, Deanna and Ryan McCullen, and Nathaniel Fettinger. Her husband, David, went to be with the Lord on March 15, 2024, after a battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life service will be held for both David and Iris McCullen at 11 a.m. on March 30, 2024, at Mount Carmel Church in Dunn, N.C. The service will be officiated by Reverend Johnny Peterson and Chaplain Jon Stovall. At a later date, the immediate family will spread the ashes of David and Iris McCullen at sea.
