WILMINGTON — William “Bill” Herbert Lowden, 94, of Wilmington, NC passed away on November 22, 2023. He was born on May 22, 1929 in Hinsdale, IL, to the late Virgil Edward Lowden and Helen McElwain Lowden. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Grace “Happy” Parker Lowden, his father, mother, and brother, Robert.

Bill attended Hinsdale Central High School, Grinnell College of Grinnell, Iowa, and received his PhD from University of Illinois in Biochemistry. He received his MBA from NYU.

He worked in the pharmaceutical and oil industries as a chemist. He became a chemicals analyst on Wall Street and covered a variety of industries during his career. In 1993, he retired to Wilmington, NC and enjoyed playing golf for the first time in decades. He became a Mason and a Shriner and put his extensive financial skills to work as a volunteer.

Bill was a loyal Cubs fan for over 90 years and reveled in their World Series victory in 2016. He enjoyed cheering for the Duke basketball team, glazed and jelly doughnuts, and relished vanilla ice cream. He continued to be able to make calculations in his head better than most with a calculator until shortly before his death.

Bill is survived by his daughters, Cynthia “Cindy” Lowden of Madison, NJ, and Laurie “Lauren” Trubey (Brad) of Stuart, FL, and his sisters Lois Lowden Lunde and Jane Lowden Fisher.
