WILMINGTON — Katherine “Kay” Sholar Smith, 84 passed away on November 23, 2023 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center. She was born on October 20, 1939, in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of the late Alexander M. Sholar, Jr. and Elsie Hollis Sholar.
Surviving are her two daughters, Allison S. Saunders of Bluffton, SC and Kimberly S. Galentine, husband; Clint of Wilmington, NC. Four loving grandchildren, Austin and Lexi Saunders, Max Collins and Garrett Galentine, one brother, Rev. Al M. Sholar and wife; Brenda of Creedmoor, NC and several nieces and nephews.
Kay was a lifetime member of Winter Park Baptist Church. Where she loved singing in the choir, enjoyed being a part of the Senior Adult Ministry and the Sonshine Sunday School Class. She served on various committees. Kay was a 1958 graduate of New Hanover High School and 1960 a graduate of Wilmington Jr. College. She was proud to have been a part of the ground breaking ceremony for UNCW. Her career was in Banking for over Forty years, First Citizens Bank, Carolina Savings and Loan, and BB&T.
A memorial service will be conducted 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Winter Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. till service time.
A private family burial will take place at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
