Margie Hardison Carter, 80

CASTLE HAYNE — Margie Hardison Carter, 80 of Castle Hayne, N.C., passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness with her loving son Richard by her side. Born and raised in New Hanover County, Margie was the second daughter born to the late Richard Charlie Hardison and Bessie Jane Harts. Having attended local schools, including New Hanover High School, Margie went on to work at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Department in 1983 and held a celebrated career there until retiring as a Sergeant in 1998. During her tenure there, she was known as a hard-working ‘spitfire’ who knew everyone and treated them with respect, kindness and honesty.

Margie is preceded in death by her husband Jack Nifong Carter who received the Distinguished Flying Cross with Three Oak Leaf Cluster as a B-17 Pilot during World War II. Margie is survived by her sister Joanne (Middleton) Wooten of Cary, N.C.

Margie was affectionately known as Ma-Maw by her three grandsons, Petty Officer Second Class (PO2) Tyler Christopher Carter (25) currently on deployment in the United States Navy, Jackson Timmons Carter (15) and Landon Howard Carter (14), and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Timmons-Carter of Columbia, S.C.

Her Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Wilmington National Cemetery. She will be laid to rest beside her husband.

Margie’s son Richard would like to extend his heart-filled gratitude to the nurses who took tremendous care of his mother since 2020.
