Irving E. Fogler, 94

WILMINGTON — Irving E. Fogler, CPA, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, June 15, 2022.  He was born on June 29, 1927, in Deland, Florida, the son of the late Leo L. and Rebecca Oppenheimer Fogler.  He was pre-deceased by his beloved wife JoAnn Landy Fogler, and his brothers Samuel J. Fogler and Nathaniel M. Fogler.  He is survived by his sons, Murray J. Fogler (Sylvia Matthews) of Houston, TX, and Michael L. Fogler (Suzanne McIntosh) of Lexington, KY; grandson Benjamin Fogler (Rebekah); granddaughters Callie Kwartler (Eric), Hannah Fogler and Alice Fogler; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.  The family sends special thanks to Anna Davis, his companion and caregiver for the last two years of his life. 

He served in the US Army Air Corps and later in the US Air Force during and shortly after World War II.  He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1953, became a Certified Public Accountant in 1955, and practiced accounting until he retired in 1996.  Shortly before his retirement, he was awarded the NC Association of CPA’s Public Service Award, and the American Institute of CPA’s North Carolina Public Service Award in recognition of his many years of public service.

He was elected to the Wilmington City Council in 1983, served on the City Sister City Commission as chair of the Doncaster, England sub-committee, and was also chair of the City of Wilmington 250th Anniversary Commission.  He is a former Trustee and Treasurer of New Hanover Memorial Hospital, Commissioner and Treasurer of the Wilmington Housing Authority, and Director and Treasurer of the New Hanover Community Health Center.

He is a past president of both the Temple of Israel and B’nai Israel Synagogue.  He also served as president of Tidal Creek Natural Foods Coop.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Temple of Israel Endowment Fund, or to a charity of one’s choice.

A Memorial Service at the Temple of Israel will be announced in the future.
