Medford “Mead” Howard, 86

SURF CITY — Medford “Mead” Howard, 86, of Surf City, NC, died Wednesday, March 16, 2022, at Lower Cape Fear Life Care.

He was born on October 14, 1935 in Downers Grove, IL, the son of the late Medford Wayne Howard Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Wilkens Howard.

Surviving is his daughter, Renee Bennett and husband Bruce of Surf City; three granddaughters, Nadia Taylor and husband Brian of Chicago, IL, Erin McShane of Los Angeles, CA and Ashley Bennett of Richmond, VA; great-granddaughter, Ruby Jean Taylor and great-grandson, Skip Taylor, both of Chicago, IL; a sister, Ruth Ann Coker of Cary, NC; and two nephews, Mark Scherer of CO and Scott Scherer of Cary, NC.

Mead was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the US Marines for ten years and earning the rank of Captain. He lived all his life in Richmond, VA and for over fifty years he worked for Crane Snead Associates as a court reporter. He loved his work and continued there until age 86.

Renee will remember him as a great dad and a great man. “He was strong until the end and he was my Hero and I will miss him a lot. Dad would do anything for anyone. He was the best dad that any girl could have.”

The family would like to extend a special note of thanks to the staff from Lower Cape Fear Life Care. Their great care made this easier for the whole family.
