WILMINGTON — Madison Durwood Edwards, 83, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 25, 2022. He was the loving husband of Wanda Edwards for 64 years.
Durwood was the son of Mack Duffie Edwards and Esther Purvis Edwards. He was born on February 28, 1938, in Cerro Gordo, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Shephard, and infant brother Edwards. He is survived by his wife; two children: Deryl Edwards (Trudy) of Forest, VA and Joanie Edge (Barry) of Wilmington, NC; four grandchildren: Lauren Lawler (Aaron), Grayson Edwards, Noah Edge, and Katie Edge; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by siblings Wendell Edwards (Ellen), Alice Joyce Bland (Steve), Dorothy Bays (David), and Joe Edwards (Linda), in addition to many nephews and nieces.
Durwood graduated from Acme-Delco High School in 1956. Durwood was known for many years in the Wilmington area as the owner/broker of Edwards Properties of Wilmington real estate firm and as owner of Edwards Hallmark since 1985.
A longtime and faithful member of Long Leaf Baptist Church in Wilmington, Durwood served as a deacon for many years both at Long Leaf and Livingston Baptist Church in Delco, NC. Next to the love of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Durwood’s love for his family was foremost in his life. A devoted prayer warrior, he never missed an opportunity to share his faith with others. A strong proponent of local and foreign missions, Durwood served on the board of directors for Covenant International Missions and traveled on short-term mission trips to Jamaica and South Korea. He also sponsored local evangelistic radio programs in Wilmington.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Wednesday, March 2, at Long Leaf Baptist Church, 317 Shipyard Blvd., Wilmington, NC. Visitation is from 10:00 AM until the time of services. A graveside service will follow at Livingston Baptist Church Cemetery, in Delco.
