LELAND — Mrs. Betty Jo Chaisson, 85, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, due to complications from Alzheimer’s. If this name sounds familiar, you might have known her as Betty Jo Fulcher, growing up in the Leland and Southport areas. Or maybe you knew her as Ms. Fulcher, a young teacher at Camp Lejeune’s Tarawa Terrace, where she met a dashing young Marine, Richard Chaisson, and decided to marry him in a whirlwind romance.
Many, many of you knew her as Mrs. Chaisson, a former Teacher of the Year and colleague at Lincoln Primary School for many years. You may have connected with Betty Jo as an avid doll collector, or in an art class, or over shared paperbacks and a love of reading. So many connections and known by so many: Betty Jo, BJ, JoJo, Mom-Betty, GG. Or just Mom.
She is survived by a sister, Minnie Irene Drew Fulcher Robbins, a son, Richard Kevin Chaisson, and daughter-in-law, Adriana Chaisson, as well as a granddaughter and 2 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a sister, Anne Fulcher Pinto, a brother, Phillip R. Fulcher, Jr., and a beloved husband, Richard Lewis Chaisson. A graveside service will be held at Zion United Methodist Church in Leland, NC, on Sat. Nov. 20, at 2 pm. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations made in Betty Jo’s name to the SECU Hospice House of Brunswick or the Alzheimer’s Association. Condolences may be shared at www.andrewsmortuary.com
