WILMINGTON — Flora Anne Eden, 77, died on Thursday, September 23, 2021 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Anne (Shotz) was born in Newton, Massachusetts on July 24, 1944 to Miriam and Manuel Shotz. She was a bit of a prankster growing up with her younger brother, had a sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor her whole life. She graduated from Newton High School and later Boston University. While in college she worked with special needs children with mentor Dr. Fred Krell at MassGeneral Hospital for Children and later worked for Social Security Disability in Boston.
She met her husband Robert when he chanced to sit in the empty seat next to her at the Sanders Theater in Cambridge, Mass. where the Prague Chamber Orchestra was performing on October 1,1969. They were married in Newton in June, 1970. Going where teaching took Robert as he finished his PhD at Harvard University, they relocated to McGill University in Montreal, then Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and finally Hillsdale College in Michigan where they resided for thirty years.
Anne was a dedicated and loving wife and mother of two children, a fierce protector and advocate. Almost single-handedly she provided a rich and safe upbringing for Autistic son, Joshua, at a time when little was known about Autism and psychologists were apt to fault the mother rather than develop a productive approach to disabilities. She was fiercely proud of daughter Jude especially when she joined the Marine Corps in 2004. Anne was proud to be a Marine mother and considered her children to be her greatest achievement and joy.
A literature major at BU, she was a lifelong reader, consuming everything from poetry and literature to politics to physics and math theory. She loved classical music and theater as well as fashion photography and the fine arts. In 2015, a hip fracture and subsequent surgery revealed a brain condition that required full-time care thereafter. Robert and son Joshua moved with her to Wilmington with daughter and son-in-law for her final five years. Though severely limited, she was always in good spirits and well cared-for surrounded by her loving family. Caregiver Jodie Sperry was integral in making her final year a joy filled with laughter. Together they read about fifty books out loud to one another. Anne was reading to her last moments. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Robert Eden, son Joshua, daughter Judith and son-in-law Anderson Araujo and her brother, Richard Shotz. Anne will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at 11am Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St., Wilmington, North Carolina 28401.
