Robert (Bob) Johnston Zimmerman, 67

WILMINGTON — Robert Johnston Zimmerman (Bob) passed away on August 24, 2021. We are relieved to know that the effects of dementia will no longer cause him pain and rest assured in Bob’s faith in Jesus for his eternal soul.

Bob was born on June 23, 1954 in Rowan County, NC. He was a man who loved to work with his hands. Though he earned a degree in Criminal Justice, he served professionally for many years in his home town of Salisbury, NC with Norfolk Southern Railroad. He also worked in various areas of construction and on the grounds of golf courses. After moving to Wilmington, NC, he took up a career with Greenlawn Memorial Cemetery where he worked until retirement. Those who know him best will not only remember his avid love of golf but can tell you that he was quite good. They would also speak to his great love for music. He loved it all; but rock, blues, and especially the Beatles were his favorites. Just one look at his impressive vinyl collection would show his commitment to the classics.

Though he was raised to know about God, Bob would tell you that it took him a little while to truly understand what it meant to live in faith. In 2013 he connected with Venture Church in Wilmington where he owned his faith and was baptized as a Christian. Those within the church family will tell you about the transformation he experienced as he began to see the grace of God at work in his life. As someone who overcame many personal vices of his own, he was a voice of encouragement to others who found themselves stuck in addiction. The impact of that voice may never truly be known.

Bob was preceded in death by Dr. John Wesley Zimmerman Jr. (father), Nancy Lois Johnston Zimmerman (mother), John Wesley Zimmerman III (brother), and Charles Ripple Zimmerman (brother). He is survived by his wife, Gerri Zimmerman, his daughter, Kate Zimmerman (boyfriend, Ben), and his sister Nancy Ann “Nan” Zimmerman. Later in life he welcomed daughter Kristin Lassiter and his granddaughters Harper and Skylar Lassiter and their dad Josh Lassiter. He is also survived by his cousins Jane Seay Patterson and Linda Seay Robertson.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington, NC on Friday September 3rd. 314 Pine Grove Dr, Wilmington, NC 28409. Guests are welcome to arrive by 6:00 pm at shelter number 6 for a ceremony and time to meet with the family. The service will be presided over by Venture Church Pastor, Chris Woolard.

Special love and gratitude go to everyone at Elderhaus PACE and to Bob’s loyal friend David Satterfield.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family would like to request that donations be made to the

Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFT).
