SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — Only 48 hours after troops officially left Afghanistan, ending an almost 20-year war that started after the Sept. 11, 2001 twin tower attacks, First Lady Jill Biden will visit the Marine Corps Base at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville Wednesday.
Her visit comes after the death of 23-year-old Sgt. Nicole Gee, who perished last week in an attack at the Kabul airport where military were helping Afghans flee the area before withdrawing fully Aug. 30.
“There’s nothing low grade or low risk or low cost about any war,” President Joe Biden said Tuesday during his address to the nation. “It’s time to end the war in Afghanistan.”
WRAL reported Dr. Biden will hold meetings and engage with military and veteran families on the Jacksonville base. She will be joined by wives of military officers, including Mrs. Donna Berger, spouse of the Commandant of the Marine Corps General David H. Berger, and Mrs. Stacie Black, spouse of the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps Troy E. Black.
She also will be delivering a pre-recorded message at 1 p.m. Wednesday as part of a “Back to Class” virtual town hall hosted by the National Parent Teacher Association.
