Arlene Walkup Verzaal, 98, remembered for her unconditional love and compassion

WILMINGTON — Arlene Walkup Verzaal, 98, died Friday, July 9, 2021, at home. She was a Wilmington native born to W.D. and Effie Walkup in 1923. She attended New Hanover High School, and upon graduation, she married Marion Verzaal. They were the proud parents of one son, Marion Verzaal Jr.

She worked various jobs throughout her lifetime, to include welding in the boatyard during World War II and being a beautician. She was probably best known as a homemaker and partner and in the family business of growing and selling plants at Dutch Nursery.

Arlene was a devout Christian who loved her church family. She was known for her love of life and her unconditional love and compassion.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; great-grandchild, Justin; and sisters.

She is survived by her grandson, Paul, and his wife, Christian, along with their two children, Chase and Lauren. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, July 16, at Oleander United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lower Cape Fear Lifecare or Oleander United Methodist Church.
