LELAND — Marie Pauline “Anita” Cantara Bourgeois, 83, died Friday, June 11, 2021. Born in 1937 in Lewiston, Maine, to Albert and Grace “Lagace” Cantara, Anita graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in 1955.
On June 16, 1956, she married Donald Edmund Bourgeois in Bennington, Vermont. They lived in Bennington, Vermont, somewhere in New Hampshire, then White River, Vermont, then Rutland, Vermont, until moving to Leland in 2000. In Rutland, Vermont, Anita worked as an administrative assistant (secretary) at the Rutland Hospital. She and Donald also had small businesses throughout their marriage, such as, deer processing and upholstery services.
Anita was a talented seamstress, enjoyed needlepoint and made the best Sunday dinners. Her home was always open to guests, including the furry kind. She was affectionally known as “Mrs. B” to many. Her first language was French, and she continued to speak her native language with friends and family. A very warm and welcoming person, her house was filled with love, laughter and openness.
Anita will be sorely missed by her children, Catherine Bourgeois of Leland, Deborah Whittemore of Plano, Texas, and Michelle Bourgeois of Leland. She will be especially missed by her five grandchildren, Nicholas and Luke Bourgeois of Leland and Rachel, Amanda and John Whittemore of Texas. She will also be missed by countless nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph Bourgeois in 2009; and siblings, Roland Vincent Cantara in 2002 and Lorraine Schienk in 1996. She is survived by her husband, Donald Bourgeois; sister, Constance Bourgeois of Bennington, Vermont, Yolande Cantara of Lewiston, Maine, and Richard Cantara of Trenton, New Jersey.
A private memorial event will be held Tuesday, June 15.
