Harold Edward Hicks, 90, retired from New Hanover Regional Medical Center

WILMINGTON — Harold Edward Hicks, 90, passed away Friday, March 26, 2021, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Harold was born May 16, 1930, in Mobile, Alabama, where he lived until he joined the U.S. Navy at age 17. In 1956, while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, he met his love, Christine Hudson, married her in 1957, and they spent the next 61 years together.

He continued his career in the U.S. Navy, and after 22 years, Master Chief Hicks retired in 1971. Once retired, he spent the next few years fishing and shrimping before taking a job as an electronic technician repairing hospital equipment up and down the East Coast; this job led him to Wilmington and to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he worked until retiring again in 1992.

Harold was an active member of Pine Valley Baptist Church, life member of the Fleet Reserve Association, life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars member of the American Legion Post 545.

He is survived by his children, Lynne Kearson (Dan) of Wilmington, Joy Hicks of Wilmington, Edward Hicks of Bullock, and Jessica Craig (Billy) of Wilmington; six grandchildren, Joshua and Hannah Walker, Alan and Cassidy Hicks, Chloe and Olivia Craig; and sister, Mary Estelle Boulding of Austin, Texas.

The family would like to extend thanks to all those who cared for Harold over the years, Andy Ilobre and Masonboro Family Medicine; Cape Fear Pharmacy; and caregiver, Adraenia Jordan. We would also like to thank the care given by the emergency room staff, Dr. Udoaku Lintula, Aydn Kivett, R.N., and the other nurses on the 5th floor who cared for him on his last day.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m., Saturday, April 10, at the Fellowship Hall at Pine Valley Baptist Church. A service to celebrate Harold’s life will begin at 1 p.m. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium with Military Honors rendered.
