Frederick Glenn ‘Fred’ Padrick Sr., 81, owned and operated Fred’s Sourdough Bread

Frederick Glenn ‘Fred’ Padrick Sr.

WILMINGTON — Frederick Glenn “Fred” Padrick Sr., 81, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021, at his Middle Sound home.

Fred was born Dec. 14, 1939, in Wilmington, the son of the late Leon and Evelyn Powell Padrick. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Lynalbert Padrick; and sister, Florence Aycock.

He retired from the New Hanover County Public School System after 23 years. He was well loved and respected by both colleagues, children and their families at Blair Elementary, where he finished his career with the public schools. Fred started Fred’s Bread in the early 1980s when a friend gifted him a bread starter. He claimed to not be a cook and was definitely not a baker at the time, but the bread began to sell out faster than he could make it. He was the owner of Fred’s Sourdough Bread for roughly 30 years.

Fred was a lay minister in several Advent Christian churches in the area. He loved preaching and enjoyed singing for the Lord. He was not ashamed to spread the gospel to everyone he met.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Bonnie Potter Padrick; daughter, Donna McGowan; son, Glenn Padrick, and his wife, Tonia; sister, Lynnette P. Spender, and her husband, Jim; grandson, Scott Padrick; granddaughter, Brittany McGowan, and her spouse, Chonly; and Weston McGowan, his great-grandson.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday, March 1, at Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The Rev. Edward “Buddy” Dowd and the Rev. Randy Ledford will conduct the service. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Wilmington Funeral Chapel.
