Donald Wayne ‘Don’ O’Neil

HAMPSTEAD — Donald Wayne “Don” O’Neil Sr., 72, was called home to heaven Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021. He was born March 28, 1948, in Wilmington, son of the late Thomas O’Neil Jr. and Murrel Lea Anderson.

Don was a graduate of Topsail High School, Class of 1966, after which he joined the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea as a drill sergeant until he returned home to marry the love of his life and start his long career with General Electric until retirement.

Don was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He was a member of the Optimist club and American Legion. He loved baseball and coached many teams. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was an active member of his church and loved his Sunday school class very much. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Hill.

Surviving are his loving wife of 51 years, Sandra O’Neil of Hampstead; son, Donald Wayne O’Neil Jr. (Lori) of Hampstead; daughter, Donna O’Neil Royal (Kyle) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; and five grandchildren who he loved dearly, Tylon, Dylon, Emma, Abby and Lily.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, at Scotts Hill Baptist Church, 185 Scotts Hill Loop Road, Wilmington. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington.
