Douglas Wayne ‘Captain Doug’ Batson, former Carolina Beach councilman

Douglas Wayne ‘Captain Doug’ Batson

CAROLINA BEACH — Beloved husband and daddy, Douglas Wayne “Captain Doug” Batson went to be with Jesus and our Caleb, Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, after a long and brave struggle with Parkinson’s.

He was dearly loved and cared for and is supremely missed by his wife of 46 years, Mary; and by the children he treasured, Drake, Savannah (James), Mark (Kelly), Holly (Jonathan), John (Chesson), Jessa (Taylor) and Peter. Doug was Grandpa (Grandaddy) to 15 grandchildren.

We are grateful to Harriet and Rebecca, R.N., for their endearing skills and support to our family and Doug for more than two years.

Doug was a lifetime resident of Carolina Beach and served 10 years as a city councilman. The people he represented knew he was not a politician and that he was there of necessity, to preserve the quality of life on the beach with his integrity and wisdom of years.

Doug’s real calling was as a master sea captain. He held and utilized his 100-ton Coast Guard License for 55 years, operating his vessels Cheerio I, Cheerio II, Holiday Lady, Cheerio Lady and Capt. Doug. In his expertise as boatman, he constructed and refitted his custom boats to catch thousands of pounds of mackerel, bass, grouper, and snapper in commercial, charter and dive operations. He proudly reminded us he was the first to coin the phrase “snapper banks.”

Doug leaves a legacy of genuine manliness and gentle personality. His treasures, he reminded us, were in his family and belief in Jesus, and he lived that out with simple unpretentiousness and lots of prayers for good weather and a good catch; and, “God take care of my family.” Our Doug leaves his big presence among us, and we eagerly look forward to being reunited soon with him in heaven.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Cornerstone Church, Wilmington. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the church. Burial will follow services in Oakdale Cemetery.
