LELAND — William M. “Billy” Johnson, 81, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2021.

He was born July 14, 1939, in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, to Evelyn Juanita Anderson and James Wilbur Johnson Sr.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn Juanita Anderson and James Wilbur Johnson Sr.; stepfather, Henry Thurston Lewis; and brothers, James Wilbur Johnson Jr. and Tommy Ray Johnson.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Germany. A machinist by trade, he and owned his own business, Leland Machine Shop. For recreation, he loved flying and his passion was building airplanes. Over the years, he built five airplanes.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Willetts Johnson; sons, Edwin Glenn Johnson (Nicole) and Dale Brian Johnson; daughter, Tina Johnson Melvin (J.R.); grandchildren, Austin Hunter Johnson and Halle Mariana Johnson; and brother, Robert Lee Johnson Sr.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery with Pastor Don Brown officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
