WILMINGTON — The family of Catherine Barbrey West, 27, is saddened to announce her unexpected passing Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020. She will be lovingly missed by her parents, David Barbrey West and Connie Sermons West.

In addition to her parents, Catherine is survived by her daughter, Evelyn Sya Reyes; sister and brother-in-law, Darcy West Toler and Kristopher Toler of Greenville; grandfather, Henry P. Sermons of Havelock; special grandmother, Thelma O. Waters; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Betty Barbrey West and Eva Gladden Sermons.

Catherine was a graduate of John T. Hoggard High school. She had a love of outdoors and sports, especially softball. Catherine was also an accomplished horseback rider and passed her love of horses to her beloved daughter, Sya. She had a love for nature and all its creatures. Catherine never met a stranger and showed compassion to all walks of life. She was a beautiful soul.

The family recognizes the struggle Catherine had with substance abuse and mental illness. They urge anyone who is struggling, to reach out for help and remember that you are not alone.

Memorial donations may be made to Coastal Horizon or to the charity of one’s choice. If so desired, a GoFundMe account has been set up to benefit Catherine’s daughter, Sya.

A celebration of life is planned for May 2021.
