Gerald Nathan Branch Sr., 79, proudly served in the Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis

Gerald Nathan Branch Sr.

WILMINGTON — Mr. Gerald Nathan Branch Sr., 79, went to be with our Lord Sunday, Dec. 6, 2020.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, James Robert Branch Sr. and Sadie Carney Branch; brothers, Bobby and Kenneth Branch; and sisters, Lib Smith and Jennie Lee Thompson.

Gerald is survived by wife of 58 years, Gladys Croom Branch; daughter, Chery Branch; sons, Nathan, and his wife, Angie and Larry Duane, and his fiancé, Kay Shafor; granddaughters, Melissa Fink, and Jennifer, and her husband, Caleb Fanning; great-grandchildren, Chance, Zackery, Emma and Mason; several nieces and nephews; and brothers-in law, John Charles Croom and John Wood Jr.

Gerald proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis on the USS Truckee (AO-147). Gerald was a longtime volunteer fireman of Winter Park Fire Department, which led him to be a sworn-in deputy during that time. Gerald was a very dedicated man of all things he took part in, whether it be his job or helping a friend.

He began his 33-year career with W.R. Grace Chemical Plant, missing only three days of work through those years. During these years, he was chosen to oversee a chemical plant being built in Trinidad, which put him away from home months at a time. His family has always been so proud of him and always will be. Gerald absolutely loved fishing and hunting.

A huge thank you to all first responders who took part in doing everything possible to revive Gerald on this Sunday morning he went to be with our Lord.

A time of visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 10, at Wilmington Funeral Chapel. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 11, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Wilmington.
