Dorothy Lynelle “Dot” Murden Dickens, 89, a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, Sept. 15, 2019.

Born July 13, 1930, in Roanoke, Dot enjoyed a childhood of music, piano and days at the beach. She was a graduate of Mary Washington College, where she earned a degree in English and studied piano.

As an adult, Dot spent her time in Wilmington with her husband of 49 years, William “Hal” Dickens. She was a school teacher, sharing her love of reading and learning with children. She was a piano teacher, sharing the art and her love of music with all who walked through her doors.

Dot enjoyed spending time with her family, vacationing at the beaches looking for shells, reading, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and playing the piano. The sounds of classical music were always resonating throughout her home.

Holidays were filled with large family gatherings, Dot’s cooking, laughter, and, of course, holiday music classics.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Lynelle Murden and Nell Louise Murden; and husband, William Hal Dickens.

Dorothy is survived by her three children including daughter, Lyn Edens, and her husband, Rick, of Palm Harbor, Florida; son, Scott Dickens of Wilmington; and son, Chris Dickens of Wilmington; grandchildren, Shannon Edens of Tampa, Florida, Jonathan Edens of Palm Harbor, Florida, Dan Dickens of Wilmington and Paige Keel, and her husband, Sean, of Wilmington; great-grandchildren, Jackson Edens, Bradley Edens and Liam Keel; sister, June Blick, and her husband, Cliff, of Wilmington; and nephews, Ken Paul, and his wife, Angie, Dane Paul, and his wife, Melissa, and Randy Paul, and his wife, Sue.

The family will receive friends at 10:45 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St., Wilmington. Visitation will be followed by a funeral service at 11:30 a.m. and will conclude with burial service in Oleander Memorial Gardens, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Dorothy “Tutu” Dickens Memorial Fund supporting Alzheimer’s research and Comfort Keepers of Wilmington to assist the caregiver’s ongoing efforts to comfort the elderly while improving their overall quality of life.

Condolences may be shared at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory.
