Carol Shingleton Tucker, 81, died Friday, April 12, 2019, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She battled Parkinson’s for many years. One of her sayings was, “Getting old is not for Sissies.”
She was born March 1, 1938, to Alpheus Marion (Tobe) Shingleton and Rosa Elizabeth Cox. She was the baby of nine children and maybe spoiled just a little bit.
Five of her brothers will be happy to greet their little red-headed sister on the other side, David, Ammon, Clarence, Joseph and Melvin Shingleton. Her nephew, Phil Shingleton, who was raised like a brother is also on the other side. She has one surviving brother, Henry Shingleton, who she always loved dearly. Her two sisters, Cora Lee Smith and Ruby Ellen Trudeau, also have gone before her so they can help welcome her home. Those sisters were always each other’s greatest fan, and will be buried together with their grave marker saying, “The Shingleton Sisters.” Ruby always referred to herself as the “good sister.”
Carol was the best mother that any daughter could hope to have. She was also a stellar grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin and friend. She has three daughters, 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, with another great on the way. I’m sure she will be instructing him with her unique sense of humor in the spirit world before his birth. Her children and grandchildren are as follows: Dawn Shingleton Porter (husband, John), who Carol took credit for “picking out” for her, Jessica Swaney (Chris), Aaron Porter, Hannah Porter Edmonds (Joey), Spencer Porter and Rosa Porter, Jennifer Lynn Tucker, of the home, who moved in to take care of mama for years while still working a full-time job, Corey Tucker (Mollie), Alexis Redd and Brianna Harris, Sharon Tucker Brill, the baby, Quentin Rodriguez and Jalyn Rodriguez. Corey and his wife, Mollie, serve in the U.S. Air Force. Jalyn is serving in the U.S. Army. Her great-grandchildren are McKenna Rose, Kathryn Rose and Evan Edmonds.
Carol was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hampstead. She loved the Lord and tried her best to serve him. She held many callings in the church, but her favorite was teaching in primary and Sunday school. She graduated from Topsail High School in 1956. She often told people that she was in the top 16 of her class. She didn’t mention that there were only 16. She was a member of the basketball team when the girls only played half court. She had always been a Tar Heels fan.
Carol was also a widely sought after caregiver. She was known for her honesty, punctuality and hard-working mentality. She’s been described as a character, a joker, a cut up, a live wire. She loved people and was always friendly. She never met a stranger. The best description that I can give of her is that she tried to live as Jesus would have her live.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 18, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints, Hampstead.
Share online condolences with the family at Andrews Mortuary & Crematory.
