WILMINGTON — Crumpton “Gill” Bowen’s big heart stopped beating on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the age of 90. He passed peacefully at home with Laura, his soulmate since childhood, at his side.

Gill was the devoted husband of Laura Bowen for 69 years and loving father of Laura Spezzano and Gil Bowen. He was “Pop” to his daughter-in-law, Holly Bowen; and son-in-law, the late Tony Spezzano. “Grandpa” loved his grandchildren, Jessica Rivenbark (married to Jason), Alison Duncklee (married to Rick), Anthony Spezzano, and Zac Bowen); great-grandchildren, Jonathan Rivenbark (married to Lauren), Bradley Rivenbark, Colton Duncklee, and Drake Duncklee; and great-great-grandchild, Grayson Rivenbark.

Gill was born Oct. 31, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Irene Kronberger Bowen and Lloyd Bowen. He was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Kurtz.

He was a Korean War veteran with the U.S. Navy. He served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Salerno Bay. Gill was “in the job” with the Nassau County Police Department, New York, for 21 years. He retired as a detective with several citations.

He was an avid golfer who could shoot his age and had a hole-in-one to his credit. He loved jazz and had an extensive music collection, which he liked to share. Most of all, he enjoyed being with his family and sitting on the porch with his friends.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Andrews Valley Chapel, South College Road, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests making a donation to Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
