OCEAN ISLE BEACH — Joseph Kirklen Smith, 95, formerly of Ocean Isle Beach and Ash, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2018. Born July 10, 1923, in Robeson County, he was a son of the late Joseph Vance Smith and Cora Ward Smith.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired commercial fisherman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Myrtle V. Smith and Dorothy M. Smith; brother, Willie Smith; sister, Ida Navroth; stepson, Frankie Cain; and son-in law, Stewart Ozier.
Surviving are his daughter, Margie S. Ozier of Ocean Isle Beach; stepsons, Charles Cain and James Cain; brother, James Smith (Wanda) of Varnamtown; sisters, Rosie Williamson of St.Augustine, Florida, and Alma Hewett of Wilmington; grandchildren, Julie Ozier Floyd (Scott) and Michael S. Ozier, both of Wilmington; nephews, Joe Smith (Marge) and Paul Smith; nieces, Rosemary Williams, Betty Stugart and Marie Kaylor; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at Calabash Lighthouse Mission Church officiated by the Rev. Larry Ward and Rev. Dennis Nealy. Burial will follow in the Pierce Cemetery, Ocean Isle Beach, with military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
