Drew Bell, 71, pursued his passion for golf

Drew Bell, 71, passed away peacefully Dec. 2, 2018, at Community Hospice Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville, Florida. Drew was born Feb. 5, 1947, in Wilmington to Charles Fullwood Bell and Vivian Allen Bell.

Drew always had fond memories of his childhood in Wilmington. He played Little League Baseball and began playing golf, which he enjoyed throughout his life. He was an avid North Carolina Tar Heel fan.

After graduating from Alfred I. Dupont High School, he attended Gordon Military College in Barnesville, Georgia. Drew was in the U.S. Army from March 3, 1967, until February 28, 1969, and served one year in Vietnam in the 1st Infantry Division. He received two Bronze Service Stars.

After his employment at Seaboard Coastline Railroad in Richmond, Virginia, Drew pursued his passion and worked at several golf courses in Richmond, Virginia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Drew loved playing golf with his good friends at Blue Cypress Golf Course. Many golf scores improved as a result of his expertise.

Drew was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, Vivian A. Bell of Nellysford, Virginia; brother, Charles F. Bell Jr. and Linda of Alpharetta, Georgia; sister, Allison L. Bell and Kathy Kristiansen of Nellysford, Virginia; niece, Lisa Bell Atkinson and Jody; great-niece, Rebekah Drew Atkinson; great-nephew, Dylan Gall of Jacksonville, Florida; and nephews, Douglas Allen Bell and Zuleyka of Panama, John Stevenson and Karey of Paradise Valley, Arizona, and Marla Moore of Seattle, Washington; cousins; companion, Erica Harris of Jacksonville, Florida; and his good friends, Steve Austin of Jacksonville, Florida, and Dickie Stinson of Wilmington.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 7, at Oakdale Cemetery with the Rev. Tara Lain officiating. Military honors will be accorded by a U.S. Army Honor Guard.
